Jamila Barton is an instructional specialist for English Language Learning in the School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD). Barton has over 20 years of instructional experience with English language learners in college settings, including English as a Foreign Language (EFL) overseas, English as a Second Language (ESL) for immigrants and refugees, English for Academic and Specific Purposes (EAP/ESP) for international students as well as English language teacher development (ELTD) for pre- and in-service teachers domestically and overseas. Her most recent position was a program officer for the Online Professional English Network (OPEN) program for international English language educators at the U.S. Department of State. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in applied linguistics/TESOL at Georgia State University and her research interests include English for professional purposes, mixed methods classroom research and English teacher development.
Barton is an English (native speaker) and language learner with some proficiency in Levantine Arabic Dialect (A2), Modern Standard Arabic (A2) and Spanish (B1). She lives on a small 5-acre homestead in Southern Maryland with two cats, a flock of ducks and a couple of nanny goats. She is a master gardener through the University of Maryland Extension Program and volunteers at the Southern Maryland Food Bank vegetable garden. In her spare time, she loves reading speculative fiction and being outdoors.
